The history behind Pisa

Pisa used to be a maritime city, being only 4km away from the shore. Due to alluvial sediments from the Arno river that runs through the city, it is now located 9.6km away from the shore. It remains unclear where the name of the city originated from, and for long remained uncertain who founded the city. However, now Archeologists propose that the Pelasgi, the Greeks, the Etruscans, and the Ligurians founded the city. Nowadays Pisa is famous all over the world because of the iconic “Leaning Tower”, but the city has much more to offer than just the tower. There are over 20 other churches, medieval palaces, and other medieval treasures.

What to do in Pisa besides visiting the famous leaning tower?

Famous all over the world because of its leaning tower, you cannot miss out on making a picture with this iconic piece of architecture while visiting Pisa. Did you know that you can even go all the way to the top of the tower to admire the view over the "Piazza dei Miracoli" and the rest of the city. Be aware though, if you want to visit the top of the tower you will need to buy tickets in advance.

Besides the tower you will be able to enjoy the "Piazza dei Miracoli" or the "Square of Miracles" in english. From the Square of Miracles you can enjoy the Leaning Tower of Pisa like said before, but other beautiful buildings such as the Baptistery, the Cathedral, and the Monumental Cemetery are not to miss out on.

Once done we suggest you to walk towards the Arno river that runs through the city. Did you know that at times dolphins can be spot in this river? Have a good look into the water while walking over the Ponte di Mezzo and you may get lucky. Along the river runs the Lungarno Mediceo which is mainly famous because of the Medici Palace or "Palazzo Vecchio", the Church of San Matteo, and the National Museum. All of these may be worth to visit based on your interests.
