Montalbano is the hill range where Barco Reale campsite is located. It divides the Upper Valdarno (Florence-Prato-Pistoia plain) from the Lower Valdarno (Montecatini Terme-Lucca-Pisa plain). It extends from Serravalle Pistoiese to the Arno River in Signa and, via the Trave del Montalbano (a path that runs along the entire ridge), allows you to reach Florence along roads and paths with little or no motor traffic.
Montalbano hills bear traces of ancient history, from the Paleolithic through the Etruscan age to the Middle Ages, with castles, parish churches, and historic hamlets. During the Renaissance, it became the favourite haven of the Medici family, who built splendid villas there, such as the Villa of Poggio a Caiano, the Villa La Ferdinanda, and Villa di Cerreto Guidi.
Barco Reale was the name of the hunting reserve of this eminent Florentine family. Today, Montalbano is famous for its fine wines, extra virgin olive oil, and the authentic atmosphere of a Tuscany still rooted in its traditions. Its diverse terrain is the ideal place for those who want to enjoy cycling. Whether on the road or through the woods, from the most experienced cyclist to the amateur, everyone can find the route matching their fitness level.
Each stretch offers unique and unforgettable views. We have selected the most evocative, all starting from the Barco Reale campsite.
